PS Vita: Heroes of Might and Magic 2 port (fheroes2) updated to 1.0.5

Developer NorthFear has updated the port of Heroes of Might and Magic 2 to the PS Vita, bringing it to version 1.0.5. 1.0.5 is a big update of ihub’s open source fheroes2 game engine (in particular with lots of bug fixes), an engine that supports multiple platforms (including the Vita port maintained by Northfear since 2017).

While you’re here, you might also want to check out Northfear’s port of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 for the PS Vita, and some of his many other ports. If you’ve grown up in the nineties there’s certainly something for you in there (Fallout 2, System Shock, Warcraft 2, X-Com…)

What is fheroes2 for PS Vita

From the readme:

Free Heroes of Might and Magic II (fheroes2) is a recreation of HoMM2 game engine.

This open source multiplatform project, written from scratch, is designed to reproduce the original game with significant improvements in the gameplay, graphics and logic (including support for high-resolution graphics, improved AI, numerous fixes and UI improvements), breathing new life into one of the most addictive turn-based strategies.

Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars is a turn-based strategy video game developed by Jon Van Caneghem through New World Computing and published in 1996 by the 3DO Company. The game is the second installment of the Heroes of Might and Magic series and is typically credited as the breakout game for the series. Heroes II was voted the sixth-best PC game of all time by PC Gamer in May 1997. An expansion pack, The Price of Loyalty, was released in 1997. Later, 3DO bundled Heroes II and its expansion pack in one box, released as Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold in 1998.

Fheroes2 – What’s new in 1.0.5

FHeroes 1.0.5 is a massive update (and it’s not specific to the PS Vita) which fixes more than 30 bugs. Specifically:

  • Speed up rendering during battles and reduce resource usage while playing sounds
  • Fix the logic and passabilities with some objects on the Adventure Map
  • Add text input blinking and polish dozen of UI elements
  • Fix many issues with AI logic on the Adventure Map and improve their castle defensive strategy
  • Over 30 bugs are fixed since 1.0.4 release
